If you’re looking for orioles in Idaho you will only find one kind. That is the Bullock’s oriole. He is about 7” long, has a yellow and orange chest with black wings, a black cap and chin strap along with a stripe along the eye. He is a bird of the riparian areas, creeks, streams and rivers as well as the brush. Good places to locate him here in Idaho would include Silver Creek Preserve, along the Boise Greenbelt and the creeks of the Owyhees...

At the end of August I went up into the mountains for a family vacation, we went to a small cabin out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but sagebrush blooming.  Around the cabin there were four hummingbird feeders hanging up that were just full of hummingbirds.  I could not figure out what would attract them and sustain them out in the desert with little to no flowers blooming, so I had to do a little research.  It turns out hummingbirds eat insects as well as nectar to get a complete diet...

Of all the groups of wild birds out there hummingbirds have to be the most interesting and most enjoyable to watch. Of the couple hundred varieties of hummingbirds out there about twenty varieties come to the United States and that is it! Lucky for us in Idaho we get at least five kinds versus the eastern U.S. that settles for one kind. I must point out that we will on occasion get a few strays/vagrants too...
